Do You Need To Winterize Your Water Treatment System?
Protect your water softener and other water treatment systems from possible freezing in cold weather months
In frigid weather and with the right circumstances, water in pipes and plumbing could freeze, causing various challenges. The same applies to water in your water softener or other water treatment systems. Depending on where your system is installed, you may need to take steps to protect your water system from freezing. This is especially important if your water system is installed outdoors or in a space that is not heated, even if you live in an area with a mostly temperate climate. If the system is installed in a vacation home or part-time residence, taking precautions to keep the system from possible freezing is imperative. Just to let you know, the Kinetico manufacturer's warranty does not cover system damage caused by freezing.
When should you consider winterizing your water system?
- The water system is installed in a part-time residence like a cabin or a vacation home.
- The water system will be unused for an extended period in cold weather months.
- Your water system is installed outdoors.
- Your water system is installed in an unheated area like a garage.
What should you do if you have a water treatment system, live in a cold climate, and use water from your water system all year?
In most cool climates, water softeners and other water treatment systems are typically installed indoors in a heated environment, greatly reducing the possibility of freezing. But don’t forget about your water treatment system if the temperature outside is cold, your heating system fails and the temperature in your house drops to or near 35° - 40° F. You may want to take winterizing precautions if your water system is installed on or near an outside, uninsulated wall. Suppose your water softener or other water treatment system is installed outside or in an unheated area like a garage or crawl space. In that case, you should take precautionary measures to reduce the chances of the unit freezing. Be sure to contact an authorized Kinetico dealer before a freeze warning to discuss their recommendations for insulating and protecting your water treatment system in cold weather months.
What should you do if you do not use water from your water system regularly?
If you have a water treatment system installed in a vacation home or a home you do not live in all year, you should consider winterizing the water system during cold weather months, even if your location doesn’t normally see freezing temperatures. Contact us to schedule a service appointment or to discuss winterizing your unit, and be sure to take the necessary precautions before leaving your water system in a house that will be empty in cooler months. We do not suggest tampering with your system on your own; you could void the system’s warranty.
When possible, we suggest installing your water system in a controlled temperature room so the system will remain within the system’s operating parameters (35° – 100° F for most systems). If you must or want to install the unit outside, you won’t be home regularly to keep an eye on it, or it’s installed in an unheated location in your home, please take the necessary precautions suggested by your Kinetico dealer to prevent freezing damage to the unit. Remember, Kinetico’s warranty does not cover damage to your system due to freezing.
